Can Mold Cause Headaches: The Reality & Solution

If you suffer from chronic headaches, you may be wondering what could be causing them. One potential culprit to consider is mold. Mold is a type of fungus that grows in damp, humid environments and can have serious health consequences if left unaddressed.

We'll explore the connection between mold and headaches, and discuss steps you can take to reduce your risk of mold-related headaches.

What are molds?

Molds are tiny fungi that thrive on dead animal or plant tissue. Both indoors and out, they are a part of our natural surroundings. Molds, sometimes known as fungi or mildew, are neither plants nor animals; instead, they belong to the fungal kingdom.

Molds reproduce by releasing tiny spores that resemble the seeds that plants produce. Numerous spores are so microscopic that they may effortlessly float through the air and are capable of being carried long distances by even the lightest breezes.

Common symptoms of mold exposure

  • Fatigue | Low Energy Level
  • Inability to Concentrate | Brain fog
  • Joint Pain
  • Allergies | Allergy-like symptoms
  • Headaches
  • Watery and Itchy Eyes
  • Excessive Coughing
  • Frequent Asthma Attacks
  • Hives
  • Depression
  • Digestive Problems | Gastrointestinal Issues
  • Sleep Problems
  • Vertigo
  • Visual impairment

How do you know if mold exposure is the culprit?

Allergy symptoms are painful

Allergic reactions do not necessarily refer to hypersensitivity reactions caused by a food allergy. We refer to conditions like runny noses, itchy or watery eyes, scratchy throats, coughing, sneezing, etc.

Hormone Imbalance

PCOS is associated with an imbalance in certain hormones, including:

Genetics

PCOS sometimes runs in families. If you have a relative with PCOS, such as your mother, sister, or aunt, your chances of developing it are greatly increased.

What are the symptoms of mold-related headaches?

The primary reason mold exposure may result in headaches is that mold spores can affect the respiratory system and impair the immune system, both of which can irritate the sinuses.

Sinus headaches feel like a continuous, dull pressure on your cheekbones, forehead, nose bridge, or inner ears. People may have difficult situations where they almost feel as though something is pressuring one of their eyes out of its socket, and in extremely severe cases, they feel as though their eye is popping out.

Can mold cause headaches?

Numerous health problems that can result from mold exposure include headaches. The frequency, duration, and severity of symptoms caused by mold vary.

Headaches & the nervous system

Researchers have found mold can negatively affect the central nervous system. Mold can quickly enter the nervous system through inhalation, IV drug use, surgery, and even contaminated medical supplies. Headaches can be a symptom of problems in the central nervous system.

Headaches & Rhinitis

Rhinitis, or irritation and inflammation of the mucous membranes within the nose, can be brought on by exposure to mold. Additionally, rhinitis patients experience more significant headaches and migraines.

Headaches & Sick buildings

A mold infestation in a building might trigger your headaches.

Sick building syndrome (SBS) is a medical condition wherein a building's occupants fall ill without apparent cause. Sick building syndrome may exist in over 30% of structures.

Does mold causes headache

Mold is one factor in SBS. Mold growth caused by water damage is present in almost half of the residential and commercial structures.

It might be challenging to identify mold in your home or building accurately. In areas you can't see, such as HVAC systems, crawl spaces, attics, and exhaust fans, mold growth occurs relatively often.

Headaches & Asthma

Mold and breathing disorders have long been connected. Additionally, 45% more people with asthma develop headaches and migraines. Mold may be the root of almost 40% of asthma cases. Even traditional medicine admits that mold may contribute to respiratory problems like asthma.

Headaches & Chronic toxic mold illness

If you are one of the 25% of individuals with a particular gene that hinders your immune system from expelling mold toxins, mold and mycotoxins are even more life-threatening.

This is also referred to as Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome or Mold Illness (CIRS).

As a result of mold illness, the body is in a constant state of inflammation. Headaches may result from this heightened inflammatory condition.

How does mold enter your body?

  1. While breathing – Spores and mycotoxins enter our respiratory system by inhalation.
  2. When we eat – Pathogens can also enter our bodies through ingestion, mainly if the food has been lying on the counter for some time.
  3. Contact with the skin – Even through dermal absorption, especially if there are scrapes and lesions on the skin, mycotoxins can enter our systems.
Most mycotoxins enter our bodies through inhalation, and the mucous membrane in our nose prevents them. For example, wet saunas or mold-infested rooms can cause these molecules to pass through our mucus membranes and invade our lungs and upper respiratory tract, causing infections and irritations. Once mycotoxins enter the bloodstream, they can travel anywhere and have been detected in numerous tissues and organs. These include urine, cancerous breast tissue, breast milk, spinal fluid, lymph nodes, and kidneys. Mold thrives in the sinuses, and central nervous system infections are also caused by brain tissue mold.

Mold Headache Treatment Options

To prevent mold growth in your home, it is important to keep it dry and well-ventilated. You can also reduce exposure by avoiding damp areas, using air filters, and regularly cleaning and maintaining your home.

Separating yourself from mold-infested surroundings is the initial step in recovering from mold toxicity. Remove all infected clothing, furniture, and other items. If you continue to be exposed to mold while receiving treatment, it will not be effective despite the tremendous effort put into it.

If you're experiencing mold-induced headaches, there are several treatment options available. Dr. Truc Nguyen, an Integrative, Holistic & Functional Medicine Practitioner at Conscious Medicine, may prescribe the following treatment options:

PEPTIDE THERAPY

Taking specific peptides reduces inflammation in the body as part of the healing process from mold toxicity.

The early phases of treatment require using these peptides since they assist in the elimination of brain inflammation, boost energy levels, and aid in the immune system's ability to regenerate.

SWEATING

According to studies, saunas can significantly aid the body's removal of mycotoxins and mold. Sweating also helps your body drain heavy metals, making binders much more effective and speeding up the detoxification process.

DETOX & BINDERS

The purpose of binders, which are insoluble particles that can pass through your stomach unabsorbed, is to draw toxins inside your gut so you can eventually eliminate them. Binder molecules have a positive charge and can attract mycotoxins with a negative charge. Mycotoxins that have been bound are expelled from the body because they can no longer pass through the intestinal wall.

However, the kind of binder to use depends on the type of mold you have. Once we know the key toxins, we can be more precise about which binders to use.

SUPPLEMENTS

Supplements like NAC, glutathione, alpha-lipoic acid, and phospholipids can help reduce inflammation. Since they have antioxidant properties, these supplements eliminate free radicals and minimize cell damage. Vitamin D is also a significant part of mold toxicity treatment, as research has shown that it can reduce asthma and allergy symptoms and help with other respiratory problems.

Here are supplements you may want to try:

PureDefense w/NAC - Supplies the necessary support to ensure a healthy defense system and immune response. Natural killer cells, or NK cells, are the first responders to our immune system, and strengthening these cells can help eradicate foreign pathogens.

Liposomal Glutathione - Glutathione is one of the most powerful antioxidants produced by the body. It helps protect cells against oxidative stress from dietary and environmental free radicals and those resulting from normal metabolic processes.

Metabolic Xtra - Supports healthy glucose metabolism—the breakdown of carbs into simple sugars to stimulate insulin production. The formula includes a combination of nutrients, including alpha-lipoic acid, chromium, berberine, and resveratrol.

Krill-plex - A unique blend of omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids, and antioxidants that provides various benefits, such as menstrual comfort, cardiovascular function, cognitive function, and joint and skin health. Krill oil provides an ideal essential fatty acid balance for healthy cardiovascular and platelet function. It is unique because it offers a naturally occurring complex of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, phospholipids, and astaxanthin.

Liquid Vitamin D3 with K2 - Vitamin D is essential in supporting bone health, maintaining cardiovascular and immune function, and promoting overall well-being. Vitamin D3 is preferable as it has been found to maintain vitamin D levels in the body for extended periods. Recent studies have shown that both vitamins D and K impart immune-modulating effects.

NUTRITION

If you are susceptible to mold, you should avoid foods like hard cheeses, alcohol, peanuts, wheat, barley, rye, corn, peanut butter, and sugar.

Dandelion tea and sufficient hydration help hasten the healing process. Eat your greens since chlorophyll (CHL) has antifungal characteristics that help reduce the symptoms of mold exposure.

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is an approach to healthcare that focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of disease. Unlike traditional medicine, which often treats symptoms without addressing underlying problems, functional medicine seeks to understand the body and identify imbalances contributing to illness. Functional medicine practitioners use various tools, including nutrition, lifestyle changes, and supplements, to help their patients achieve optimum health. The root cause is a term used in healthcare to refer to the underlying cause of a disease or condition. A root cause may be genetic, environmental, or lifestyle-related. Identifying and addressing root causes is a key component of functional medicine.

I’m not sick. Should I still schedule a consultation?

Prevention is the best medicine, especially regarding your health. Most people believe that illness occurs in the body when you get older; this is not true. By taking steps to prevent disease and injury today, you can stay healthy and avoid costly medical bills later on down the road. Unhealthy habits create chronic inflammation in the body, leading to later illness.

What if I live in another state? Can you still be my doctor?

Yes! Our consultations are done virtually via phone or Internet via Zoom Calls.

Do you accept insurance?

We do not accept insurance. You can pay by credit card, debit card, HSA/FSA debit card, or care credit. You are welcome to submit the superbill for possible reimbursement from your insurance company. This document itemizes the services rendered and provides the insurance company with the information they need to process your claim. Many of our patients get up to 70% reimbursed.
We do not take any part in submitting claims or calling insurance companies, which is 100% the patient’s responsibility. We do not bill or participate in Medicare for any of our services.

Why don’t you accept insurance?

Unfortunately, insurance companies often dictate patients' care, limiting the effectiveness of treatments and time spent with our patients. Reimbursement rates are often too low to cover quality care costs. The administrative burden of dealing with insurance companies can be significant, which takes away from time that could be spent providing care to patients. We believe in providing the best possible care to our patients by spending as much time as necessary with each patient with personalized treatment plans to ensure their needs are met.

Where can I get my lab testing done?

Our most commonly recommended lab test for stress management is a non-invasive test done in the comfort of your home with ease.

Some labs may require bloodwork which we offer at our Conscious Medicine office. If the distance is an issue for lab testing, we are happy to assist you in finding a facility closer to where you live. At Lab Corp, you can schedule an appointment directly with their facility.

*To follow CDC sanitation and safety protocols, we only accept one patient at a time in our office, wear proper PPE, and disinfect them.*

Does insurance cover lab tests?

Lab tests are not covered by insurance. Many insurance plans, especially those provided by employers, only cover tests considered "medically necessary." You can check with your insurance supplier to see if they will reimburse you for out-of-network labs.

Lab tests are necessary because they can help diagnose many conditions, from uncomplicated infections to more severe diseases. They can also tell us how well your organs work and help us monitor your overall health.

How do I schedule an appointment?

Dr. Truc offers a complimentary 15-minute phone consultation to answer any patient's questions or concerns regarding their health ailment and go over the services provided at Conscious Medicine. We look forward to connecting with you and scheduling a call today.
